Light-Filled Garden Extension in Merchiston, Edinburgh
Jones Robbins Tobin led the reconciliation and considered extension of this detached stone villa in Merchiston, Edinburgh, consolidating a series of previous additions into a unified architectural response within a conservation area setting.
Our vision was to create an array of pitched roof extensions to the rear of the property that would sit in harmony with the existing structure. The new volumes wrap the rear and side of the house, carefully scaled and detailed to establish a measured dialogue with the original stone villa. Contemporary in expression yet rooted in place, the extensions add a confident new layer to the building’s evolving history.
At ground floor level, a generous open kitchen and living space is organised around a central hearth, forming the social heart of the home. From here, circulation routes branch naturally into the existing house, connecting to a formal dining room, utility accommodation and a wine cellar. The plan has been carefully rationalised to improve flow, clarity and connection to the garden.
At first floor level, a home office enjoys views over the tree-lined garden, while a gym and bathroom are discreetly integrated within the side accommodation. Throughout, natural light is drawn deep into the plan, strengthening the relationship between interior and landscape.
