Contemporary Home Extension in Trinity, Edinburgh

Jones Robbins Tobin designed this extension to strengthen the connection between the house and its surrounding landscape, drawing the interior toward the sloping garden, mature trees and distant views across the Firth of Forth.

The proposal introduces a single-storey extension that wraps around the rear of the existing house, accompanied by a series of carefully considered internal reconfigurations across both ground and first floor levels.

Arrival is restructured through a side entrance leading into a formal vestibule and cloak area, which reconnects visitors to the main circulation of the house. From here, the plan unfolds toward a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space within the new extension, while also maintaining access to the formal living room at the front of the house.

Large glazed openings frame expansive views down the garden and draw natural light deep into the interior. Alongside the open-plan living space, a series of ancillary rooms. including a back kitchen, powder room, utility room and wine store, support the day-to-day functioning of the home.

A central feature of the design is the introduction of an external courtyard, allowing daylight and natural ventilation to reach deeper parts of the plan while providing a calm outlook for the adjacent home study and family room.
