A complete renovation and extension to an Edinburgh family home. Introducing contemporary light filled spaces for the next generation of family owners.

Our clients approached us to explore a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing house, introducing additional accommodation to live and work that would directly connect to the existing garden.

Our vision for the project was to introduce a extend a series of extension structures, which would weave itself into the plan of the house creating an open plan family hub, with interlinked spaces and direct access to the rear garden. To delineate between old and new, a series of oak lined sleeves and bespoke joinery additions are introduced with secret and sliding pocket doors. These interventions allow the house to remain flexible in its use, while retaining the ability to create cosy retreats in winter months.

The two extensions use contrasting materials, with a glass link corridor introduced between the structures. The contemporary stone façade knits itself into the fabric of the stone dwelling, with the vertically clad timber structure sitting in contrast, subservient to the main house. The alterations introduce a new era for the house, one rich in history and tailored for contemporary family life for the next generation.
